Decided if I was really serious about creating my own website, it was high time I got started in earnest. So I've signed up for PersonalWebPages free five-week course.

I did a course in the spring this year, run by the trAce Writing School. If you're interested, you can see the results at Geocities. It was a fabulous course, but ...

Because I concentrated so much on web techniques, tools and frills, the content isn't anything to write home about.

This time, I know a bit about HTML already. So I plan to keep it simple. Focus on the content. Build up as I go along.

Today I just made a start on the input to my home page. I'll jazz it up later. But for now, content is all.

Now I'm going to try uploading it, using CuteFTP.

After one or two false starts, uploading my web page turned out to be quite easy with CuteFTP. Have you ever noticed that software instructions seem to spend a lot of time telling you the things you already know, then jump to more advanced techniques without any explanation of what they are for. What they leave out is the bit in the middle - the bit I really need to know. However, trial and error came to my rescue. Now I shall have to do it quite regularly, so I don't forget what I did in the first place.

Changed the background colour and text colour on home page (just to see if I remembered how). Also added a small image (perhaps this needs to be increased in size?).

Removed background colour and replaced with background image. Easy peasy.

Added links here, there and everywhere to facilitate navigation round the site (that's not yet big enough to warrant it, but ...)

Spent my time today looking for nice pictures for my pages. Added a nice image to "Knots" poem in Serendipity. Also changed the background to homepage, trying to make it more interesting, but it just turned out too busy and messy, so changed it back again.

I've been busy over the August Bank Holiday weekend, so haven't done much at all to the website. Had a man come round to inspect the ceiling in the spare bedroom, which looks as if it's in severe danger of collapsing. Now waiting to hear how much it's going to cost me. Went to the local Bank Holiday Fair yesterday - it was FREEZING!

Added a definition of my site name on the home page, using < BLOCKQUOTE >.
